The Celtic Media Festival has announced the nominations for its upcoming edition, which will take place in Belfast in June, bringing together audiovisual professionals from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Brittany, Cornwall, the Isle of Man and Galicia. Among the selected projects are two Galician productions, the animated children’s series Bibopalula and Pipo, shortlisted in the Children’s Programme (Screen) category.

The festival, which has been held for more than forty years, aims to promote the languages and cultures of the Celtic nations through audiovisual media, while also supporting creative talent and production in minority languages. Over the course of three days, from 2 to 4 June, the event combines conferences, masterclasses and professional meetings with the presentation of the Torc Awards, which recognise excellence in television, radio, cinema and digital media.

Two Galician productions for young audiences

On the one hand, Bibopalula, directed by Laura Mahía, is a musical animated series starring the Forest Band — Robin, Pegui, Merli and Carpin — combining stories about nature with original songs aimed at early childhood audiences. Throughout its episodes, the series offers a playful approach to the natural environment and its cycles, using music as its narrative axis.

Meanwhile, Pipo, created by Laura Mahía and Andrés Mahía, follows the adventures of Berta and a small extraterrestrial visitor who unexpectedly arrives at her home, transforming everyday life into a world full of discoveries. Designed for children aged between five and eight, the series combines humour, imagination and small everyday stories through which children can learn and explore the world.

An international showcase for Galician audiovisual production

The presence of Bibopalula and Pipo at the Celtic Media Festival represents a new opportunity to give international visibility to Galician audiovisual production within an event that every year brings together producers, creators and media professionals.

Beyond recognising outstanding content, the festival has also become a key meeting point for new partnerships and European co-productions, strengthening cultural and creative ties between the participating territories.
