The Pazo da Cultura in Carballo will host this Saturday, 10 January, the first screening of the documentary To the Rhythm of the New Regueifa following its premiere on 28 November at Culturgal. The screening is scheduled for 12:00, as part of the activities organised for the fifth edition of the Galician Regueifa Awards, promoted by La Voz de Galicia.
Carballo’s selection as the starting point for this new stage is no coincidence. The town is recognised as one of the historic cradles of regueifa and will host the annual gala on the same day, celebrating and showcasing Galician oral improvisation, bringing together historical figures, new voices and regueifa schools from across the country. In this context, the documentary becomes part of an event designed to highlight a living tradition in constant transformation.
Directed by Saúl Rivas and Manolo Maseda, with cinematography by Jairo Iglesias and production direction by Laura Canto, To the Rhythm of the New Regueifa is an audiovisual journey through the present-day practice of oral improvisation in Galicia. The film travels across different regions to accompany regueifeiras and regueifeiros who are reshaping this practice, fostering an ongoing dialogue between generations, spaces and ways of learning and transmission.
The documentary builds a collective narrative in which improvised verse acts as a creative, social and identity-driven axis. From workshops and educational settings to community gatherings and cultural stages, the film shows how regueifa remains alive thanks to the community that sustains it, adapting to changing times without losing its essence.
The screening in Carballo offers a new opportunity to present the work in a context closely connected to the tradition it portrays. After this event, To the Rhythm of the New Regueifa will continue its screening tour across different venues, to be announced in the coming weeks, with the aim of further sharing and promoting contemporary regueifa practice.
