To the Rhythm of the New Regueifa, the film shortlisted in the Best Documentary category at the 24th Mestre Mateo Awards, continues its public journey with two new free screenings this week.
The first will take place tomorrow, Wednesday 18 February, at 7:00 pm at Cines Códex in Lugo, as part of a cycle organised by the Galician Academy of Audiovisual Arts to showcase the feature films and documentaries nominated in this edition. The session will be free of charge until full capacity is reached.
The event is designed as more than just a screening. The audience will be able to take part in a post-screening discussion with the film crew and key figures from the regueifa tradition, including regueifeiras Lupe Blanco and Josinho da Teixeira, alongside director Manolo Maseda. The session will also include a short musical performance, reinforcing the collective and living nature of the project. The second screening will take place on Saturday 21 February at 12:00 pm at the Auditorio de Galicia in Santiago.
Directed by Saúl Rivas and Manolo Maseda, To the Rhythm of the New Regueifa is an audiovisual journey through the present-day practice of oral improvisation in Galicia. The documentary travels across different territories to portray the people and communities keeping this tradition alive, highlighting its capacity for adaptation, transmission and transformation in a contemporary context.
The film builds a collective narrative in which improvised verse appears as a creative, educational and community-based tool. From educational spaces to cultural gatherings, the documentary shows a practice that continues to evolve thanks to new generations and an ongoing dialogue with the past.
These new screenings therefore offer an opportunity to further highlight a project that reaffirms regueifa as a living heritage and a collective expression that continues to shape identity and community in the present.
